Spring is here! It’s time to throw open the windows, let in the fresh air, shake out the dust and remove any overlooked stains from winter. Cleaning doesn’t have to be overwhelming or time-consuming. If you don’t want to set aside a Saturday for your whole home, clean room by room. Savor the feeling of satisfaction of having a fresh, clean house, ready for the new opportunities spring brings with these Spring cleaning tips.
Grab a bucket of water, a soft bristle brush, a towel, and White Wizard® Stain Remover. Let’s start at the front door.
Use two mats, one outside and one inside the door. Here’s how to clean them:
Outdoor Doormats. Hose and air-dry to clean them.
Indoor Rugs. Vacuum them on both sides. Going over the back will push trapped dirt onto the floor, where you can easily vacuum it up. If you have caked-on mud, pretreat with White Wizard® Stain Remover and wash according to the mat’s instructions.
Go through clothes and shoes and remove anything stained, in need of repair, or worn out. Carefully look over your spring and summer clothes as you take them out of storage. If you see any stains, pretreat with White Wizard® Stain Remover or liquid laundry detergent and water. Then let the clothes sit for at least 30 minutes. Use a soft bristle brush to work the stain remover into the stain if needed. Wash as recommended on the label.
Pull furniture away from walls and vacuum behind and under them. Dust the woodwork and air vents while you have everything pulled out. Use the upholstery tool on the vacuum cleaner to clean the cushions, their trim, and stitching. If you notice any stains on the carpet or upholstery, you can sponge or soak the stain in cool water. If the stain has dried, gently go over it with a soft brush to break up the deposit. Apply White Wizard® Stain Remover and blot the stain with a clean towel until most of the stain is gone. If the stain is on a washable cushion, pretreat with White Wizard® Stain Remover for at least 30 minutes before laundering.
Spring is time to clean bulky items, like pillows and comforters. You only need to clean these items two or three times a year, so spring and fall are a great time to toss them in the washing machine. If perspiration has changed the color of the fabric, apply ammonia to fresh stains or white vinegar to old stains. Then rinse. Stubborn stains may respond better to washing with a product containing enzymes or oxygen bleach using the hottest water safe for that fabric.
Mattresses should be cleaned about once a year. Spring is a perfect time to freshen where you sleep. Use your vacuum’s upholstery tool to clean the top and sides. After cleaning, rinse with a damp cloth and sanitize with a disinfectant spray. Sweeping the mattress with steam from a clothes iron will also kill dust mites. Vacuum one more time to finish. It’s time to prepare your patio and outdoor furniture for al fresco meals in the sunshine. To clean the winter grime away, squirt dish detergent into a bowl of warm water. Wipe down the tables and chairs. Spray water from the garden hose to rinse all the suds off.
